Paul McCobb is one of my favorite designers. He made practical but beautifully simple pieces that were available to the masses. Today, it’s a bit more difficult to get his pieces, so I decided to make a prototype of a mid century nightstand that would be a nod to his creation, with some slight variations.
This piece was created with plywood to test dimensions, and the next iteration will most likely be oak, followed by walnut. Each side was mitered together to allow for tight corners, although a slightly rounded version would be fantastic as well. I wanted to add a bit of contrast by painting the interior green. Leaving the paint out or using a more muted color would make the piece a bit more subtle if that’s the look you are interested in.
